Barrel Bolt

The barrel bolt serves as a rudimentary lock system. “It has two main components: a sliding metal bar and a catch plate. The catch plate is mounted on the door frame in such a way that the sliding metal bar or bolt can easily fit inside the opening of the catch, thus physically blocking the door from being opened until the bolt is retracted.”

The sliding bar can take the shape of a long cylinder or simply be rectangular.

The barrel bolt is usually fastened to a piece of wood with screws in the appropriate gaps.

As it is meant as a rudimentary lock, it isn’t expected to withstand great stress. However, thicker and sturdier version can be found in hockey locker room doors, where an additional lock can secure the hardware.
