HANNAH\LAUREN FINGER JOINT
FINGER (BOX) JOINT
APPLICATIONS
Furniture! Aesthetics. Not as resistant to stressors as the dovetail.
HISTORY
"The Romans used box joints and dovetails. Noah used them when he built the Ark. The Egyptians used them, along with mortise and tenons…..that should cover it..."
"That box may date from the 1890’s but it was made in a real
millwork shop or factory, not by a independent craftsman..."
TOOLS & METHODS
On the router table...
We cut a "mortise" in our perpendicular fence the width of the straight bit, then plugged it with a piece of MDF. Then used that as a block for measuring our subsequent "fingers" or mortises, by moving the board on top of the block each cut.
STRESSORS
OBSERVATIONS
HAVE to make sure all your surfaces on the table (table base, fences) are flush, otherwise you will have unevenness in your cuts and therefore your joints will not be exact. However, with a correct set-up these joints are easy to achieve.
I think this is awesome
