Tongue and Groove joint

Tongue and Groove joint

  • It's an edge to edge joint used to join narrow boards together to make up a large panel.

  • the joint allows two flat pieces to be joined strongly together to make a single flat surface;

  • Used mainly in flooring, parquetry, panelling, and similar constructions;

Work Planning:

                                         Step 1: preparation of boards

* boards cross cut to the same and final length.
* Ensure that the surface grain on all boards runs in the same direction to facilitate final cleaning.
* number the boards or mark the face side so we can rearrange them in the same order.

Step 2: Groove measurement and lay out :needed help L(

Step 3: Bit adjustment, height and centering

                          Straight bits used: 1/2'' and 1/4''

                  Used Featherboard to help hold and secure the board against the fence.

                                                 Yeh first step done!!!

                               Step 4: Adjustements for cutting tongue

      we didnt get the first tongue right. we thought that's easy! .

     The lesson we learnt ''THERE IS NO UNDO BUTTON''

                                         Step 5: Dry fit testing

                                      Step 6: Little sanding for better fit

                                                (who said this is cheating!!)

                                                Step 7: preparation for glueing.

                            An advice, dont rely on these clamps. Go for bar clamps.

       Step 8: adding glue, the joint was too tight.

         We had a stressful time to close the gap between boards.

                                           Step 9: finaly everybody is happy.
