32mm System
The 32 mm system is a furniture construction and manufacturing system used in the production of custom cabinets and other furniture. It serves to standardize both component dimensions and production processes with the following set of design features:
- Distance of the holes in the row of holes: 32 mm
- Diameter of the holes: 5 mm or 8 mm
- Distance of the front row of holes to the front edge: 37 mm
- Hole-centre distance in vertical hole lines: divisible by 32
There are many types of hardware available using mounting holes 32mm apart accommodating this system such as hinges or drawer slides.
The system was developed after the end of World War II in order to help speed reconstruction of the vast number of buildings destroyed during the war. The spacing was decided upon because that was the closest that multiple drill bits on a line boring machine at that time.
There are many ways to produce these holes such as a drill and jig, plunge router and jig, line boring machine, c&c machine, etc.
