Application to Cabinetmaking
Used for any kind of drawers or roll-out shelves and trays. They come in a range of sizes and load ratings allowing for a range of light to heavy-duty applications.

History and Evolution
Modern center and side-rail drawer slides evolved from earlier wooden drawer slides. Modern slides can be made from metal or plastic and use rollers and bearings to reduce friction and wear on the rails. They can also include dampeners and springs to assist the opening and closing motion and prevent the drawer from being slammed shut. Carriage-style slides can also allow for vertical and horizontal adjustments to align the drawer with the cabinet.

Common Stressors
Modern mechanical drawer slides can more easily support heavier loads because they often use rollers or bearings instead of conventional wood-on-wood rails which can stick or jam and may need to be lubricated. Wooden slides can also wear out over long-term use more easily than metal mechanical slides with bearings. Mechanical drawer slides are also smoother and easier to open and close than wooden rails. A single center-mounted slide can be a simpler and lower-cost option than a pair of side-mounted slides, but support less weight due to there only being a single drawer slide.

Tools required
Installing mechanical drawer slides usually doesn't require anything more than a drill and screwdriver and/or allen set.
