The scarf joint can be used to combine two short pieces of wood to make them the right length. It can also be used in a more decorative way or as a support beam. A nibbed scarf joint ( or scarph joint ) is much stronger then a plain scarf joint. A razor scarf joint (below) is most commonly used in boat building and timber framing.
The scarf joint was one of the first joints ever used. it dates back to the early roman times or earlier.
Dove tail saw, circular saw, chisels. Depending on the joint this can all be done with simple hand tools.
It depends on the particular version of the joint. You can simply cut in at a angel or you can make a complex interlocking joint.
A plain scarf joint is one of the weaker joint but a interlocking scarf joint is quite strong from all angels.
A standard scarf joint can be reinforced with fish plates and bolts threw it.
Its a good way to use up extra wood if strength isn't required or as a decorative piece combining two different kinds of wood.
