Scarf Joint

  • The scarf joint can be used to combine two short pieces of wood to make them the right length. It can also be used in a more decorative way or as a support beam. A nibbed scarf joint ( or scarph joint ) is much stronger then a plain scarf joint. A razor scarf joint (below) is most commonly used in boat building and timber framing.
  • The scarf joint was one of the first joints ever used. it dates back to the early roman times or earlier.
  • Dove tail saw, circular saw, chisels. Depending on the joint this can all be done with simple hand tools.
  • It depends on the particular version of the joint. You can simply cut in at a angel or you can make a complex interlocking joint.
  • A plain scarf joint is one of the weaker joint but a interlocking scarf joint is quite strong from all angels.
  • A standard scarf joint can be reinforced with fish plates and bolts threw it.
  • Its a good way to use up extra wood if strength isn't required or as a decorative piece combining two different kinds of wood.
